Everyone knows the stereotypical college student: buying books that require a mortgage to pay for, constantly asking your parents for extra money to buy “groceries”, living day-to-day with barely enough money to buy a frozen pizza, and constantly having to say no to going out because it physically hurts to pull out your wallet.
The saving grace to your wants and needs? College jobs! They allow you to earn a little extra cash while balancing academics, sports, social life, or other priorities. However, in a rural town such as Canton, you may ask, ‘How do I find a job that works around my schedule?’ The answer may be more surprising than you think.
The life of Culver students is jam-packed with sports, classes, social activities, and meetings that swallow up any free time you may have, so a job with extreme flexibility is a must. Thankfully, there are some jobs right here in town that offer a flexible schedule, decent hours, and pay that may not be the most glamorous, but for sure will help with buying everything you need to survive at Culver. Below, we’ll cover some off-campus jobs that your fellow Wildcats work at, along with their experiences working there.
Our first job is Primos. This restaurant is at the heart of Canton, which is great for business. Julia Babcock is a sophomore who recently started working there two weeks ago. When asked about balancing work, school, and softball, she said “My boss is really understanding” and “I feel like with the schedule I picked it works really well.” There are three training days in which servers are paid $14/hr without tips. Primos starts their servers at $7/hr with tips. Julia typically works around 20 hours a week and takes home a decent amount of cash tips, usually ranging from $120-$150. If that’s not good enough, Julia also said that the manager offers a free meal at the end of every shift.
If you’re interested, good news…Primos is still actively hiring. Just walk in and ask for a job application to get the hiring process started.
Our next off-campus job is another town favorite, Los Girasoles, commonly referred to as simply ‘Mexican’. This restaurant offers a vast array of Mexican food. Celeste Rodriguez is a sophomore who just started working at Los Girasoles at the beginning of this fall semester and has enjoyed working there thus far. She gets paid $4/hr with tips, which Celeste said are pretty decent, especially since it’s tax-free. Celeste gets decent hours, too. She stated, “I would say roughly 32 hours a week.” Which is 12 more than allowed by Culver-Stockton’s payroll. When asked about work/school balance, Celeste said that it is quite difficult, especially with her being a Radiology major and involved in Greek life. Overall, she states that she enjoys working at Los Girasoles, which is still hiring if anyone is interested.
