Why do sports programs and extracurricular events seem to wear pink during all of October? The reason is to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Culver-Stockton (C-SC) is one to not miss out on this opportunity, for Culver-Stockton Athletics takes it a bit further.
Breast cancer is a cancer that forms around the chest area and can go undetected for a long period of time. Breast cancer is one type of cancer that can appear without a lump. It can show up in men and women and was the most common cancer in women in 157 countries out of 185 in 2022 per the World Health Organization.
Culver-Stockton’s sports have a big hand in showing Culver’s support for breast cancer during October.
Wildcats Women’s Volleyball; they are showing support by wearing their pink warm-up shirts. But they do not stop there; they are had their pink-out game where they wore their pink jerseys to show their support on October 18th.
Cross Country is not going to let this month pass without getting involved either; they had some runners wear pink face paint during their last competition on their October 17th meet.
The C-SC Dance Team will be wearing pink ribbons during the homecoming performance. So keep an eye out for that. The squad will perform at halftime of the football game October 25.
The football team can be seen all month during their games bringing awareness to breast cancer; they are putting on pink tape around their wrists/ankles, wearing pink mouthpieces, and many other accessories. But one player on the football team, Redshirt Junior Linebacker Recorian (Reco) Williams, sticks out since he wears a pink sweatband around his bicep with a ribbon stitched in the middle of the band. When asked about why he wears it, he says, “I wear it for my grandmother.” Reco goes on to tell me how much his grandmother impacted him and who he is today by saying “ I was close to her growing up since she raised me my younger years but passed when I was eight from cancer. That was the first time I cried at a funeral, even though I was a little young to understand what was really going on I knew that the person that wanted to see me shine was gone.” Now when Reco plays football he says “ I know she did not get a chance to see me play, but I know she is in heaven watching over me. So I try to keep her with me by wearing the band around my forearm.”
The softball team did their annual home run derby fundraiser to fight breast cancer, and they had a pretty nice turnout. Per Kataleena Hunt, Senior Outfielder, “The only difference with this year is we had more kids from the community come out.” Where they would raise a little over 200 dollars and donate it to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The women’s soccer team for most of their games during the month of October wear pink jerseys. But they have been in contact with past alumni of the women’s soccer team to see if they would agree for the team to raise money to help with their fight against cancer.
