On Monday, Jan. 28th, Culver-Stockton is celebrating its 173rd Charter Day. For those who have never heard of Charter Day, it celebrates the day the bill for a new Christian University in Missouri, which would later be named Culver-Stockton, passed through the senate on Jan. 28th, 1853.
Dr. Scott Giltner, history professor at Culver-Stockton, provided a bit more background regarding the history and significance of Charter Day. “By Fall 1852, political leaders and religious leaders from area congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) were prepared to take Northeast Missouri to its next level of development with the creation of the new Christian University”, Giltner stated. “ On 15 January 1853, the state of Missouri took up debate on the charter of the new Christian University. A committee of nine of the founding trustees had been tasked with drawing up the charter, determining specifically that it would “embrace both male and female students.” This bill would later be passed through the house on Jan. 27th and then through the Senate the next day, Jan. 28th.
As for what Culver-Stockton College will be doing to commemorate this day, Clair Eaton, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, provided more details. From Jan. 18th to March 19th of 2026 (Mary Culver’s Birthday), Culver-Stockton will be launching its “ALL-IN for C-SC” spring giving campaign. There will be various events and fundraising happening in the tri-state area of Canton, Quincy, and Hannibal to engage alumni, students, faculty, and community members. One of these events will be the ALL-IN Coffee and Convo event that will take place every Thursday in February in all three towns. There will also be social media and email campaigns featuring photos and videos from events and updates on where the college is with its goal. Lastly, there will be “Wildcat Wednesdays” every Wednesday from February to March 11th that feature activities during lunch time.
As Culver-Stockton celebrates its 173rd Charter Day, the college is making it a goal to bring alumni, students, faculty, and community members together through the “ALL-IN for CSC” campaign, which features different activities, events, and fundraisers.
