The Culver-Stockton College softball team banged out 13 hits in a 13-11 game two victory to earn a split of a doubleheader with Cottey College Sunday afternoon in Nevada, Mo. The Comets won the opener 8-0.

In the victory, Lauryn Campbell went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, while Alle Thompson collected four hits in five at-bats, three runs scored and three RBI. Taryn Brownadded two hits and a RBI, and Sydney Williams had two runs batted in and hit a solo home run.

In the first game, the Wildcats were limited to five hits with Thompson collecting two hits to finish with six hits in seven at-bats. It was the second time this season the Wildcats have been shutout.

C-SC (2-4) returns to action this Wednesday, March 10, for a doubleheader at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team turned the tables on the University of Jamestown (N.D.) by sweeping a doubleheader from the Jimmies and earning a split in the four-game of the weekend series Sunday afternoon at Nichols Field.

The Wildcats broke a 4-4 tie in the opener by plating three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the first game 9-4. In the nightcap, Dax Flowerree‘s pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh scored Ronald Applewhite with the winning run as the Wildcats prevailed 10-9.

In the exciting final game, C-SC held a 7-1 lead through four innings before the wheels fell off for the Wildcats. Jamestown took advantage of a bases empty, two-out error to score six times off of four Wildcat pitchers to tie the game. The Jimmies collected just two hits and walked three times in the frame.

The Jimmies grabbed a 9-7 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning; however, the Wildcats answered with two of their own to tie the game.

Josh Quick led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alejandro Cardenale then single Quick home to bring the hosts to within a run. A sacrifice by Cody Dennis moved Cardenale to second, and then Douglas Barker ripped a two-out single up the middle to score Cardenale with the tying run.

In the seventh, Applewhite, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game, singled to open the inning. Collin Hall sacrificed him to second and he was still there with two outs when Flowerree delivered his game-winning heroics.

Dennis, the sixth Wildcat pitcher, earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

In the first game, German Sepulveda went 4-for-4 with and double and four runs scored to lead the Wildcats’ 10-hit attack. Cardenale and Dennis each garnered two hits, and Collin Hall added a two-run double.

Alfredo Cruz-Guzman pitched one inning of relief to earn his first victory of the season. Stefan Stockwell hurled the final two innings to pick up her second save of the year.

The Wildcats (4-8) are scheduled to play a single non-conference game at Columbia College this Wednesday, March 10. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.

The Culver-Stockton College men’s bowling team won three different matches and advanced to the consolation bracket finals before being eliminated one step short of the finals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Sunday at Arrowhead Bowl in Keokuk, Iowa.

The Wildcats, who entered the day as the fifth seed, began Sunday with an upset over fourth-seeded Clarke (Iowa) by sweeping the Pride in three straight baker games. C-SC fell into the loser’s bracket in the next round when top-seeded William Penn recorded a sweep of the Wildcats.

The Wildcats kept their title hopes alive in the next round with a three-game sweep over sixth-seeded Peru State, setting up a rematch with Clarke in the next round. Against the Pride, C-SC showed the earlier match was not a fluke as the Wildcats eliminated the Pride with 3-1 series victory.

Just one step away from a spot in the championship series, the Wildcats fell to third-seeded Grand View University in four games and was eliminated from the tournament, settling for third place overall.

Meanwhile, the women’s team couldn’t quite find the magic of the men’s team and was beaten in its first two matches. The Lady Wildcats opened the day with a 3-0 loss to fourth-seeded Grand View in first series of the day. C-SC faced third-seeded William Penn in the next round and won one game before being eliminated in four games.

After a week off, both teams return to action March 20-21 at the Leatherneck Classic in the Quad Cities. The men will play at the Highland Park Bowl in Moline, Ill., while the omen will play at the Big River Bowl in Davenport, Iowa.
