Wildcat Sports Digest – February 5

The Culver-Stockton College men’s basketball team went on a 21-0 run in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit and earn a 77-72 victory over Grand View University Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House. The Wildcats trailed 59-49 with seven minutes to play in the game when they started their decisive run. The Wildcats, now 13-11 overall and 9-9 in the Heart, will travel to Springfield, Mo., this Wednesday, Feb. 6, to face Evangel University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Ashcroft Center.

The Culver-Stockton College women’s basketball team used a stingy defense over the final three quarters against Grand View to post an 80-66 victory Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House. The Wildcats bolted out to a 27-20 lead after one quarter as they shot 67 percent from the field by connecting on 12 of their 18 field goals. The Vikings were just as good in the opening quarter, shooting 60 percent (9-15) from the floor. the Wildcats tightened the grips over the next three quarters, limiting the visitors to 30 percent shooting (15-50) and outscoring the Vikings 53-46. C-SC, now 14-10 overall and 10-9 in the Heart, is scheduled to travel to Springfield, Mo., this Wednesday, Feb. 6, to face Evangel University in another league contest. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Ashcroft Center.

The Culver-Stockton College men’s volleyball team began the Molten Invitational with a four-set loss to Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday afternoon. The Wolves captured the first two sets before the Wildcats gutted out a victory in the third set to force the match to go to the fourth. However, the Wolves pulled away late in the fourth set to post a 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 victory. The Culver-Stockton College men’s volleyball team dropped its final match of the Molten Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, to the University of California-Merced by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats game against Clarke University (9) February 5th has been postponed. The Wildcats will continue on February 8th at the Missori Valley tournament.

The Culver-Stockton College track and field team competed in its first meet of the season Saturday, competing at the Dr. Jim Green Invitational at Illinois College in Jacksonville. The women’s team finished sixth out of the 14 teams that scored in the meet with 35.5 points. The men’s team placed 13th out of the 15 teams that scored with eight points. Both teams will participate in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Indoor Championships next weekend, Feb. 8-9, at Doane University in Crete, Neb.

The Culver-Stockton College bowling teams participated in the McKendree University Baker Challenge this weekend at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill. The women’s team finished 14th out of 20 teams with a two day score of 6925 pins in 38 baker game over two days. In men’s action, the Wildcats finished 20th out of 21 teams with a two-day score of 6,823 total pins. Both teams will take a week off in preparation for the Hoosier Classic, which will be held Feb. 16-17 at the Western Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.
