CANTON, Mo. – Although the team has lost a couple of key components, Women’s Basketball Head Coach Janette Burgin is not afraid of what’s to come and shows full confidence in her team and prepared for what’s to come.
After the excitement of last year’s season, Burgin has been more prepared to face the new changes and challenges the team will be facing this season.
Since the end of last season, the team has lost 8 important seniors who left a good mark on the program.
“We lost two starters and a few that came off the bench for us. But the leadership is the biggest piece of the puzzle that we are going to be missing,” said Burgin.
Now the program is working on introducing new players to the line up and having returning and new players take the leadership roles that were lost. All with the hopes of missing pieces players like Avery Oetting who graduated in May to be filled in.
“The young ladies that are returning are going to have to step up, which luckily Haley Webb has been doing a great job at so far in leading this team in this offseason so far,” stated Burgin.
Also helping Webb, Allysa O’Connor and Elizabeth Reed, are players Burgin is wanting to step and lead from the bench while they both recover from injuries that occurred during the offseason. Freshman Carly Davidson, Charlie Walker, and Aiden Beck are also players Burgin is counting on to step up and take in a leadership role in the team for any other missing pieces that the team’s puzzle will require for another successful season.
“Everyone had done a great job during the summer to individually work on their skill sets that they are going to bring into the table this season”, said Burgin.
“We are also very defensively sound because I always say that defense creates offense and allows for more opportunities to be created on the offensive side,” said Burgin.
With the season starting very soon, Burgin is prepared for the start of the season and focusing on going game by game with her team and being prepared for whoever their next opponent is.
