Culver-Stockton Student Life is enforcing a new alcohol policy that changes alcohol rules for special events. Under the new rules, 15% alcohol by volume, or ABV, is banned campus-wide. Another change is students will be required to wear wristbands for those 21 and up.
Culver-Stockton College Student Life announced a new alcohol policy on Aug. 24, 2026, introducing major changes to special events (fraternity events, Homecoming, etc.). Officials say the policy aims to address and stop the problems that come from drinking hard liquor.
The new hard liquor rule didn’t change how drinking in the dorms works, but it mainly affected what are called special events, such as fraternity parties and homecoming events. The school can select an area on campus and label it as a “special event zone,” and anyone who is 21+ can enjoy an alcoholic beverage and will receive a wristband to identify them. The goal of this change is to reduce issues that involved hard liquor.
“You’ll show up, get a wristband, drink away. Walk around, drink away. But that’s because it’s a special event,” said Dr. Kirby, vice president for student experience at Culver-Stockton College.
Culver-Stockton College Student Life changed the policy so the school could host events where alcohol could be served to those of age. Last year’s rules restrained this because of residential alcohol policy rules where you couldn’t have any in the halls. The new policy loosens that and adds new restrictions for special events only, while keeping the residential hall policy the same.
Early responses to this policy have been mixed. Some students argue that the changes may hurt or change that culture entirely.
“The biggest concern I see is students pregaming too heavily before events,” said Sophomore Dylan Rottinghaus.
Some students worry the new policy could change the “college experience,” while others are excited to see what comes next.
Since this policy has been in place, there have not been any reported instances of violations while Student Life staff and campus police enforce these rules.
